MARQUETTA’S STORY--  I first saw the Uhuru drum and dance ensemble when they came to Knoxville when I was seven years old.  I was in awe.  These beautifully choreographed movements, so strong and so powerful, had my full undivided attention. After some opportunities to dance with others my age, we moved to Nashville when I was 14 and I joined the company!  When I turned 17 I was in high-school playing basketball, tennis, and running cross-country.  I was also a facilitator of an organization to empower black youth internationally. After some time doing other things I came back and danced with The Village Drum and Dance ensemble and then began a stint in the army and am now finishing college.  When I began to dance with Interplay 3 years ago, it was a whole different story.  I was able to make my own moves up and really let my creativity shine.  I call my class African Inspired Dance, because I will not always teach the origin of a particular dance or the reasons it is used and because all my movements will be inspired by my African Dance background. You will get to enjoy the company of other people in the community and sweat some and relax some and play some, and you will do it all to the rhythms of life.
